Care and Support Information

Below is a list of common types of additional learning needs (ALN) that your child might be experiencing, along with some common signs for each:
Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD)
- Dyslexia: Difficulty reading, frequent guessing at words, poor spelling, problems with decoding words, slow reading rate.
- Dysgraphia: Poor handwriting, difficulty organizing thoughts on paper, inconsistent spelling, trouble with fine motor skills.
- Dyscalculia: Difficulty understanding math concepts, problems with number sense, trouble with calculations, poor sense of time and measurement.
SUPPORT TEAM: DYSLEXIA UNIT OR LEARNING SUPPORT TEAM. 'MILES DYSLEXIA UNIT' OFFERS PRIVATE ASSESSMENTS.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Inattentive Type: Difficulty staying focused, easily distracted, forgetfulness, problems organizing tasks.
- Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: Excessive fidgeting, inability to stay seated, excessive talking, difficulty waiting for turns.
- Combined Type: A mix of inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms.
SUPPORT TEAM: PSYCHOLOGICAL TEAM, COGNITIVE SUPPORT TEAM OR NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DEPARTMENT.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Difficulty with social interactions, challenges with understanding social cues, repetitive behaviors or routines, intense focus on specific interests.
- Unusual sensory responses, difficulty with changes in routine, problems with communication or understanding language.
SUPPORT TEAM: ASD UNIT, AUTISM SUPPORT TEAM OR NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DEPARTMENT. 'HEALIOS' OFFERS PRIVATE ASSESSMENTS.
Speech and Language Disorders
- Expressive Language Disorder: Difficulty expressing thoughts, limited vocabulary, trouble forming sentences.
- Receptive Language Disorder: Difficulty understanding spoken language, trouble following directions, problems with comprehension.
- Articulation Disorders: Difficulty pronouncing words correctly, speech that is hard to understand.
SUPPORT TEAM: SPEEACH AND LANGUAGE UNIT. THE WELSH LANGUAGE UNIT ON ANGLESEY SUPPORTS STUDENTS WHO ARE NEW TO WELSH.
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)
- Over- or under-sensitivity to sensory inputs (e.g., sounds, textures), difficulty with motor coordination, trouble with transitions or changes in routine.
- Excessive sensitivity to light, noise, or touch, or conversely, seeking out intense sensory experiences.
SUPPORT TEAM: MENTAL HEALTH TEAM (CAMHS) OR EMOTIONAL SUPPORT TEAM.
Emotional and Behavioral Disorders
- Emotional Care Disorders: Excessive worry, fear of specific situations or people, physical symptoms like headaches or stomachaches without medical cause.
- Depression: Persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty concentrating.
- Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD): Frequent temper tantrums, argumentative behavior, refusal to comply with rules, blaming others for mistakes.
SUPPORT TEAM: CAMHS, MENTAL HEALTH TEAM OR EMOTIONAL SUPPORT TEAM.
Intellectual Disabilities
- Difficulty with problem-solving, limited academic progress, challenges with practical tasks, slower learning rates.
- Trouble with adaptive behaviors such as self-care, social skills, or communication.
SUPPORT TEAM: CAMHS OR EDUCATIONAL CARE TEAM.
Physical and Health Impairments
- Chronic Health Conditions: Frequent absences from school, fatigue, difficulty participating in physical activities.
- Physical Disabilities: Difficulty with mobility, fine or gross motor skills, or use of assistive technology.
SUPPORT TEAM: CAMHS, PHYSICAL HEALTH & SUPPORT TEAM OR SCHOOL HEALTH WORKERS (SCHOOL NURSE).
Social and Environmental Factors
- Exposure to trauma or instability, issues with peer relationships, inconsistent school attendance, lack of support at home.
SUPPORT TEAM: SOCIAL SUPPORT TEAM.
